The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has dark fiber between all of the buildings on their multi-acre campus.
A campus, that is constantly expanding and where construction is a constant. In response to a series of catastrophic failures due to severed cables, they chose to puchase and install three mobile, GigE FSO links w/ non-penetrating mounts.
The links are currently being used to provide backup to UAMS’ fiber backbone, but can also be rapidly relocated as needed to provide emergency connectivity in the event of another cable cut. Each link cost less than $10,000 and has a range of ¼ mile.
FYI – UAMS is one of the largest public employers in the state of Arkansas with almost 9,000 employees, including nearly 1,000 physicians who provide medical care to patients at UAMS and its affiliates, Arkansas Children’s Hospital and the VA Medical Center. UAMS and its affiliates, have a total economic impact in Arkansas of about $4.4 billion per year.
